Restoring Hope in Novoselivka

In the frontline village of Novoselivka, where many homes have been damaged or destroyed, the arrival of essential non-food items brought more than practical support, it brought hope.

Ahead of the distribution organised by the Yashchenko Foundation in partnership with IOM, residents told us they had received little to no humanitarian assistance since the escalation of hostilities. Families were relying on neighbours, makeshift shelters, or temporary modular housing to survive increasingly harsh conditions. Needs were urgent and continuing to grow.

On the morning of the distribution, the community gathered quietly along Tsentralna Street as our staff and volunteers set up. Despite the difficult circumstances, there was a sense of warmth and anticipation. As boxes were unloaded, elderly residents approached cautiously, some visibly unsure.

One elderly man paused before accepting his box.

“Is this really for us? For free?” he asked, almost in disbelief.

When reassured, his expression softened into clear relief, a moment that deeply affected the team.

Mothers arrived with their children, some pushing prams over uneven ground, others carrying toddlers in their arms. Their smiles as they received hygiene kits and household essentials reflected not only gratitude, but the feeling of being seen and supported during an extremely challenging time.

What stood out most was the solidarity within the community. Villagers helped one another carry heavy boxes, checked on elderly neighbours, and shared quiet words of thanks. While many continue to face uncertainty about their futures and the loss of their homes, the sense of unity remained strong.

For several families, the items distributed made a tangible difference, clean bedding for children, hygiene supplies for families sharing crowded spaces, and essential household items that helped restore dignity to daily life.

The distribution in Novoselivka was more than a logistics operation. It was a reminder that even after immense loss, people retain hope, resilience, and a strong sense of community. With the support of humanitarian partners, they are not facing this alone.

As one beneficiary told us:

“Today we felt that someone remembered us. This help means more than you know.”
